Loss l Time l Memory
Visually, my work pursues the passage of loss, time and memory. While these are universal themes, they are interpreted individually and are profound for each person. The viewer guides the interpretation. That is why I don’t title any works.
Process
Before working full time as an artist, I spent years in construction and carpentry, which exposed me to a range of materials that now find a place in my work. As part of my working process, I build my own wall panels, constructions and floor and table pieces. It’s in my hands from beginning to end.
Materials
For me, scrap and salvage yards are inspirational resources. The imagination goes wild surveying stuff that sparks an idea. Parts of old radiators, pieces of pipe, tangled wire – all fair game for the next piece.
Along with discarded scrap, I use basic artist materials, like papers, gesso, acrylic paint, graphite, charcoal and ink.
Influences
Looking at the work of other artists, classical and contemporary, it’s the experience of what they express and how it touches me. That is enough for me – it is everything.
Scale
The more I work, the scale of pieces seems to be getting larger. Labels and definitions such as “painting,” “sculpture” and “constructions” are less important. The definitions no longer apply.
Elements
Mark making, patterns, lines – I’m in love with the line
Black & white – the gray scale, a holdover from black & white photography
Color – sometimes I use it, sometimes I don’t
